The road is the hardest part, whichever you choose
Before comparing islands and boats, it helps to know what getting there is like. It is the part of the trip people find hardest, and it is the same road for every option.
Pickup in Panama City is a window, not a fixed time: 5:00 to 5:30 AM from city hotels, and 5:30 to 6:00 AM from hotels near the airport. In high season, December to March, it can be as early as 4:30 AM.
The drive to the coast takes about 2.5 to 3 hours in a 4×4. The last stretch is steep, winding and unpaved. If winding roads make you feel sick, take motion sickness pills before you leave. At the port a boat takes you out to the islands, which takes 20 to 60 minutes depending on where you are going.
On a day trip you do all of that twice in one day. The tour runs 13 to 14 hours door to door. On an overnight trip you do the drive out one morning and the drive back on another, with island time in between.
Road transport comes in two forms. Shared means a 4×4 with other passengers, collecting from several hotels. Private means the vehicle is only for your group, from $580 round trip for 2 people. The water taxi at the port is shared on every option, private included. Private transport does not make the departure later, because Guna Yala runs on a fixed daily schedule. What it buys is comfort. On a trip of two nights or more, our honest view is that it is worth it.
There is also a charter flight from Albrook Airport in Panama City, about 50 minutes, which removes the road entirely. We quote flights per group.
What the $148 full-day tour gives you
The day tour is the simplest way to see San Blas if you only have one day. Here is how it runs:
- 5:00 to 5:30 AM: hotel pickup in a 6-passenger 4×4.
- 7:30 to 8:30 AM: Guna Yala checkpoint and the port. Your original passport is required. Copies are not accepted.
- 9:30 AM: island hopping starts. You visit Perro Chico, where you can snorkel a sunken ship, Diablo Island, and the Natural Pool, a warm, waist-deep lagoon where starfish are commonly spotted.
- 12:00 PM: island lunch.
- 3:30 PM: the boat heads back, and you reach your hotel around 7:00 PM.
The $148 covers the shared 4×4, the shared boat, lunch and one drink, island entry fees, and the Guna Yala tax of $22. It is the only product we sell where that tax is already in the price. Not included: snacks at the breakfast stop, extra drinks, and snorkel gear, which you can rent on the island for $10 or bring your own.
Groups are small, up to 12 guests per departure. The price is the same on every date.
The day tour suits you if your schedule is tight, you want a taste of the islands, and a long day on the road does not put you off.
Island cabin stays: one night changes the pace
An island stay starts from $200 per person for one night. That price includes the round-trip 4×4 from Panama City, the boat to the island, and three meals a day. Longer stays cost less per night.
You arrive on the island around 10:00 AM, so you get the rest of that day and the evening there. The next morning a boat takes you back to the port, and most guests are in Panama City around midday.
Please know what you are booking. San Blas is Guna Yala, an autonomous territory governed by the Guna people, and you stay as their guest. These are simple places, not resorts:
- Cabins are basic, some with sand floors. Many options share a bathroom block.
- Electricity is limited. On Franklin the power runs from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. On Pelicano and Wailidup you charge devices at the restaurant in the evening.
- Most islands have no internet and little or no phone signal.
- Drinks are not included, not even water. Islands sell beer, water and sodas from $2, cash only.
- There are no ATMs in San Blas. Bring US dollars in small bills.
- Bring insect repellent.
The Guna Yala tax is not included in island stays: $22 per tourist, or $7 per Panamanian resident with proof of residency, paid in cash at the Nusagandi checkpoint.
Private cabins have a two-person minimum per cabin. If you travel alone, you pay a single supplement for a private cabin, or you can take a dorm bed on Pelicano, from $200 for one night.
If you are looking at Wailidup, read its page first. From June to October it gets sand flies when the breeze drops, it can be at capacity in busy weeks, and upkeep has slipped. It is at its best from November to May, and for June to October dates we will suggest another island.
Private charters: the boat is your hotel
A private charter means your own boat and crew: every catamaran has a captain and a cook, and on some sailboats the captain also does the cooking. Prices per person per night, at 2 guests, start at:
- $250 on a sailboat
- $450 on a catamaran
- $725 on a catamaran with air conditioning
That includes the crew, three meals a day, snacks, drinks with and without alcohol in moderation, snorkel masks and fins, and fuel. Most boats also have Starlink internet, and we confirm it for the boat you choose. Transport from Panama City and the Guna Yala tax are extra.
The minimum is two nights. We suggest five or more if you can, because with less time a bigger share of the trip goes on travel. Over New Year (December 20 to January 10), Carnival and Easter, charters carry a 20% surcharge and most boats ask for a 5-night minimum.
The main difference from an island stay is that you move. Your captain plans a route around the islands you want to see, the weather and the wind, so you are not tied to one beach.
What each option costs per person
Here is a like-for-like example for two people travelling together, using shared transport where it is not already included:
| Option | Trip price | Transport | Guna Yala tax | Total per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-day tour | $148 | Included | Included | $148 |
| 1 night, Franklin sand-floor cabin | $200 | Included | $22 | $222 |
| 1 night, Pelicano cabin with private bathroom | $230 | Included | $22 | $252 |
| 2 nights, sailboat charter from $250 a night | $500 | $140 | $22 | $662 |
Drinks on the islands are paid separately. To try your own dates, nights and group size, use our San Blas trip cost calculator.
How to choose
Choose the day tour if
- You have one free day and no more.
- You are fine with a 13 to 14 hour day, much of it in a 4×4.
- You want everything arranged, including the tax, for one price.
Choose an island cabin if
- You can give it one or two nights and want to split the road across two days.
- You are comfortable with simple cabins, limited power and shared bathrooms.
- You want the lowest price for an overnight trip.
Choose a private charter if
- You have two nights or more, ideally five.
- You want privacy and your own route between islands.
- You want your meals cooked on board and drinks included.
Whichever you pick, do not book a flight out of Panama on the day you come back from San Blas. Weather, sea and road conditions can shift the return time. Spend that night in Panama City and fly the next day.

Frequently asked questions
Is a San Blas day trip worth it?
Yes, if one day is all you have. The $148 tour covers transport, three stops, lunch and the Guna Yala tax. The trade-off is about 5 to 6 hours in a 4x4 on a 13 to 14 hour day.
How long is the drive from Panama City to San Blas?
About 2.5 to 3 hours each way by 4x4, then a boat ride of 20 to 60 minutes. The last stretch of road is steep, winding and unpaved. Take motion sickness pills if winding roads bother you.

Only on the $148 full-day tour. On island stays and charters you pay it in cash at the Nusagandi checkpoint: $22 per tourist, or $7 per Panamanian resident with proof of residency.
