The 4x4 Journey

Panama City to Paradise

5:00 AM
Hotel Pickup
Be in the lobby at 5:00. Your driver passes between 5:00 and 5:30 AM. Hotels near the airport are collected between 5:30 and 6:00 AM on shared transport, because the vehicle takes the city hotels first. In high season, December to March, pickup can be as early as 4:30 AM.
6:30 AM
Quick Stop En Route
If the pickups ran on time, the drivers make a short stop for coffee, water and snacks. The spot varies from day to day and the driver chooses it, so we never name it in advance.
7:30 AM
Guna Yala Checkpoint
Passport check at Nusagandi. Entry fee paid here in cash: $20 per tourist or $5 per Panamanian resident, plus a $2 port fee for everyone. Children under 9 are exempt from the entry fee.
8:20 - 8:45 AM
Arrive at the Port
You reach the Caribbean coast and board the shared boat out to the islands.
The boat ride
20 to 60 Minutes on the Water
Near anchorages are 20 to 30 minutes from the port. Far anchorages are 45 to 60 minutes or more, and there can be a wait at the port while the boat makes the longer run out to you.
10:00 - 11:00 AM
You Have Arrived
Near anchorages: aboard between 10:00 and 10:30 AM. Far anchorages: between 10:30 and 11:00 AM. Island stays: around 10:00 AM. On a private charter most captains sail that same day once you are aboard, weather permitting.

Before You Go

Good to Know

Passport Required

Your original passport is mandatory at the Guna Yala border checkpoint. Photocopies, photos, and driver's licenses are not accepted. You will be turned back without it. No exceptions.

Luggage Rules

Shared 4x4: 1 soft bag + 1 backpack, max 13kg total. Hard suitcases do not fit in the Jeeps. Charter flights: 11kg per person, soft bags only. Pack light, always.

Cash is King

There are no ATMs in San Blas. Bring cash in USD for the $22 border tax, island purchases, mola textiles, lobster from Guna fishermen, and tips. Bring more than you think.

Why the 5 AM Start

Guna Yala operates on a fixed daily schedule, and the early departure is what gets you onto the water taxis in time. Private transport does not change this. It buys comfort and a slightly different pickup, not a later departure.

If You Miss the Pickup

There is no second departure. If you are not ready at your pickup time the day is lost, and we cannot be responsible for it. Please be in the lobby on time.

If the Weather Turns

We check the forecast the evening before and keep you updated. If we judge that conditions will not let us deliver the service safely, we cancel and refund you.

Do Not Fly Out the Same Day

We strongly advise against flying out of Panama on the day you return from San Blas, and we cannot accept responsibility for a missed flight. Spend the night in Panama City and fly out the next day.

Common Questions

Shared 4x4 + water taxi: $140 per person round trip. Guna Yala border tax ($22 per person) not included, paid in cash at checkpoint.

Private 4x4 (one way): $290 for 2 people, $330 for 3, $370 for 4, $410 for 5.

Standard pickup is 5:00 to 5:30 AM from Panama City hotels. Hotels near the airport are collected 5:30 to 6:00 AM on shared transport, because the vehicle takes the city hotels first. In high season, December to March, pickup can be as early as 4:30 AM. We confirm your exact time the evening before.

Yes, 100%. Your original passport is required at the Guna Yala border checkpoint. Copies, photos, or driver's licenses are not accepted. You will be turned back without it.

Shared 4x4: 1 soft bag + 1 backpack, max 13kg total. Hard-sided suitcases do not fit. For charter flights: 11kg per person in soft bags only.

The road is safe when driven by experienced local drivers in proper 4x4 vehicles. The last 1.5 hours are steep with constant curves on unpaved road. Motion sickness pills recommended. AMPA works exclusively with vetted drivers.

Technically yes, but not recommended. The road is rough, unpaved, and requires a true 4x4. There is no parking at the port. Most rental companies prohibit their vehicles on this road.

No. There is no direct public bus service to San Blas Islands. The only options are shared 4x4 transport or charter flight.

Morning departure (all anchorages). From near anchorages the boat collects you 7:00 to 8:00 AM and you reach the port around 8:30 to 8:45 AM. From far anchorages it collects you 6:20 to 7:30 AM, earlier because the run back is longer, and you reach the port around 8:00 AM and wait there. Both groups are back in Panama City 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, dropped door to door at your hotel.

Afternoon departure, near anchorages only. The boat collects you 2:45 to 3:15 PM, you reach the port 3:45 to 4:00 PM, and you are back in Panama City 6:00 to 7:00 PM. This option does not exist at far anchorages.

The same vehicles that bring the morning group out to the coast are the ones that take you back, which is why there is a wait at the port. It is built into the day.

It depends where your boat is anchored. Near anchorages are 20 to 30 minutes from the port. Far anchorages are 45 to 60 minutes or more, and you may wait at the port while the boat makes the longer run. Your captain chooses the anchorage based on the weather, usually confirmed a day or two before you travel, which is why we cannot give an exact hour at the time of booking.

We check the forecast the evening before and keep you updated. If we judge that conditions will not let us deliver the service safely, we cancel and refund you. We would rather lose the booking than put you on the water on the wrong day.

Flights leave Albrook airport in Panama City between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM daily and land at the Corazon de Jesus airstrip, the only strip where boats collect guests. Coming back, flights leave Corazon de Jesus between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Flying removes the road entirely, which matters most on shorter trips.

We strongly advise against it. Weather, sea and road conditions can all shift the return time, and we cannot accept responsibility for a missed flight. Spend the night in Panama City and fly out the next day.
