How do I get to San Blas from Panama City?
There are two ways. By road, a 4x4 collects you in Panama City between 5:00 and 5:30 AM and drives about 3 hours over the mountains (the last stretch is steep, winding and unpaved), then a water taxi takes 20 to 60 minutes to your island or boat. Shared transport is $140 per person round trip, and a private 4x4 with the shared water taxi is from $580 round trip for 2. By air, small charter planes fly from Albrook Airport. Either way, bring your original passport and $22 in cash for the Guna Yala tax.

Every way to get to San Blas
There are four realistic ways to reach the San Blas Islands from Panama City: a shared 4x4, a private 4x4, driving yourself to the port, or a small plane from Albrook Airport. We run the two 4x4 options and can quote flights. Below is each one plainly, including the one we do not arrange for you.
First, the honest part. The road is the hardest part of a San Blas trip. It is about 3 hours from Panama City, and the last stretch is steep, winding and unpaved. The islands and the water are the reward. The drive is what people find hard, and it is the one part nobody can improve.
Shared 4x4 and shared water taxi
$140 per person, round trip. A 4x4 collects you from your Panama City hotel between 5:00 and 5:30 AM (hotels near the airport between 5:30 and 6:00 AM), and you share the vehicle with other travellers. At the port a shared water taxi takes 20 to 60 minutes to your island or boat, depending on where it is anchored. Luggage is one soft bag and one backpack, 13 kg in total. The Guna Yala tax of $22 per person is extra and paid in cash at the checkpoint.
Private 4x4 and shared water taxi
$580 round trip for 2 people, $660 for 3, $740 for 4, $820 for 5 and $840 for 6. The car is yours, with the same early start, because Guna Yala runs on a fixed daily schedule. The water taxi from the port is still shared on every option. Groups of 7 or more need two vehicles, and we quote that with your booking. The $22 Guna Yala tax is extra, per person, in cash.
If it fits your budget, we honestly think private is worth it. That road at 5 AM, at the start and end of a trip you have planned for months, is the part people most often wish they had not economised on.
Driving yourself
It is possible, but it is not an easy drive. You need a true 4x4, and most rental companies do not allow their vehicles on this road. On the way you pass the Guna Yala checkpoint at Nusagandi, where everyone must show an original passport (copies, photos and driving licences are not accepted) and pay in cash: $22 per tourist ($20 entry plus a $2 port fee) or $7 per Panamanian resident ($5 entry plus the $2 port fee). Children under 9 do not pay the entry fee. Your car also pays a vehicle fee of $10 to $15 at the checkpoint.
The road ends at the port, Puerto Tupile Dibin. Your car does not take you to the islands. From the port you still need a boat. We can book you a seat on our shared water taxi for $70 per person round trip ($35 one way) and give you the port time when you book. You can park at the port for $5 per car.
Flying from Albrook
Small charter planes fly from Albrook Airport in Panama City to the Corazon de Jesus airstrip in about 50 minutes. Flights leave between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and return flights leave Corazon de Jesus between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Corazon de Jesus is the only strip where boats collect guests. The luggage limit is strict: 11 kg per person, soft bags only. The price depends on the number of passengers, so we quote it for your group. You still need your original passport and $22 in cash for the Guna Yala tax. Flying removes the road entirely, which matters most on short trips.
Sailing from Colombia
Some travellers reach San Blas on a multi-day sailing crossing from Colombia. We do not arrange that crossing at the moment.

Your original passport is mandatory at the Guna Yala border checkpoint. Photocopies, photos, and driver's licenses are not accepted. You will be turned back without it. No exceptions.

There are no ATMs in San Blas. Bring cash in USD for the $22 border tax, island purchases, mola textiles, lobster from Guna fishermen, and tips. Bring more than you think.
Guna Yala operates on a fixed daily schedule, and the early departure is what gets you onto the water taxis in time. Private transport does not change this. It buys comfort and a slightly different pickup, not a later departure.
There is no second departure. If you are not ready at your pickup time the day is lost, and we cannot be responsible for it. Please be in the lobby on time.

No. There is no public bus to the San Blas Islands. You can take a shared or private 4x4, drive yourself in a true 4x4, or fly from Albrook Airport.
Morning departure (all anchorages). From near anchorages the boat collects you 7:00 to 8:00 AM and you reach the port around 8:30 to 8:45 AM. From far anchorages it collects you 6:20 to 7:30 AM, earlier because the run back is longer, and you reach the port around 8:00 AM and wait there. Both groups are back in Panama City 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, dropped door to door at your hotel.
Afternoon departure, near anchorages only. The boat collects you 2:45 to 3:15 PM, you reach the port 3:45 to 4:00 PM, and you are back in Panama City 6:00 to 7:00 PM. This option does not exist at far anchorages.
The same vehicles that bring the morning group out to the coast are the ones that take you back, which is why there is a wait at the port. It is built into the day.
It depends where your boat is anchored. Near anchorages are 20 to 30 minutes from the port. Far anchorages are 45 to 60 minutes or more, and you may wait at the port while the boat makes the longer run. Your captain chooses the anchorage based on the weather, usually confirmed a day or two before you travel, which is why we cannot give an exact hour at the time of booking.
