San Blas is one of the few Caribbean destinations that’s genuinely beautiful year-round, it sits south of the hurricane belt and enjoys warm temperatures every month. But the best time to visit San Blas Islands depends on what you’re looking for: flat calm seas, vibrant marine life, lower prices, or fewer crowds. This guide breaks it down month by month.
San Blas Weather Overview
San Blas has two main seasons: a dry season from approximately December to April and a wet season from May to November. Unlike many Caribbean islands, even the wet season in San Blas is manageable, rain tends to fall in short, intense showers rather than all-day downpours, and the islands remain open and accessible throughout the year.
Water temperature hovers between 27°C and 30°C (80–86°F) all year, and air temperature stays between 28°C and 33°C (82–91°F). In short: it’s always warm. The variables are wind, waves, rainfall, and visibility.
Month by Month Guide to San Blas
December and January (Peak Season ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)
The beginning of the dry season brings the best sailing conditions of the year. Trade winds blow steadily from the northeast, creating ideal conditions for catamaran sailing. Rainfall is minimal, visibility underwater is excellent, and the skies are reliably blue. This is the most popular time to visit, book your catamaran charter at least 3–4 months in advance.
February and March (Peak Season ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)
February and March are arguably the best months to visit San Blas Islands. Winds are strong and consistent, making for exhilarating sailing between islands. Seas are calm in the protected anchorages. Snorkeling visibility is at its best. Temperatures are comfortable and rainfall is very rare. Prices are at their peak, expect catamarans to be fully booked well in advance.
April (Excellent ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)
April is the final month of the dry season and remains excellent for sailing. Winds begin to soften slightly toward the end of the month, which actually makes conditions more comfortable for families or those who prefer calmer waters. A great month to visit if you’ve left your booking later than ideal.
May (Shoulder Season ⭐⭐⭐⭐)
May marks the start of the rainy season, but conditions in San Blas remain very good. Wind drops compared to peak season, which means more comfortable motoring between islands. Rain showers begin to appear but are usually brief. Prices drop noticeably and catamarans are easier to book. A great value month for experienced travellers who don’t mind occasional rain.
June through August (Green Season ⭐⭐⭐⭐)
June through August brings more rainfall and occasionally rougher seas. However, these months have their own magic: the islands are dramatically lush and green, the water is warm and calm in protected anchorages, and dolphins are frequently spotted (peak dolphin season is June–September). Fewer charter boats on the water means you’ll often have islands completely to yourself. Best value of the year.
September and October (Rainiest Months ⭐⭐⭐)
September and October see the most rainfall of the year. Some sections of the overland road to San Blas can be challenging after heavy rain. Seas can be rougher at times. That said, experienced sailors who love the drama of green-season sailing often prefer this time. Prices are at their lowest and catamarans are readily available. Not recommended for first-timers or families with young children.
November (Transitional ⭐⭐⭐⭐)
November is a transitional month, rain decreases, seas begin to settle, and conditions steadily improve toward the peak season. A solid value option, especially in the second half of the month. By late November, conditions are approaching peak season quality at green-season prices.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?
For peak season (December–March), we strongly recommend booking your San Blas catamaran charter 3–6 months in advance. Quality catamarans fill up fast and last-minute availability is rare during the holidays.
For shoulder and green season (April–November), 4–8 weeks in advance is usually sufficient, though earlier is always better to guarantee your preferred dates and boat.
