The San Blas Islands, officially known as Guna Yala, are one of the Caribbean’s last untouched paradises. Spread across 365 coral islands off Panama’s Caribbean coast, they draw visitors from around the world seeking crystal-clear water, white sand beaches, and a private catamaran experience unlike anything else. But getting there requires a bit of planning. This guide covers every option for getting to San Blas from Panama City in 2026.

The Two Main Ways to Get to San Blas Islands

There are two main ways to travel from Panama City to the San Blas Islands: by 4×4 jeep transfer (the most common) or by small charter flight. Most catamaran charter guests arrive by jeep, while island cabin guests or those with less time sometimes fly in.

Option 1: 4×4 Jeep Transfer to San Blas (Most Popular)

The overland route to San Blas is an adventure in itself. A 4×4 jeep picks you up from your hotel in Panama City at 5:00–5:30am (high season: 4:30am) and drives approximately 3–4 hours along the Llano–Cartí road, a rugged dirt track that climbs through the Serranía de San Blas mountain range before descending to the Caribbean coast. From the Port Tupile Dibin, a short boat transfer takes you out to the islands or to your waiting catamaran.

At AMPA Tours private catamaran charters do not include ground transport by default. We offer 4×4 transport as a separate service that follows the same schedule. Ask us when booking to add transport to your itinerary.

Option 2: Charter Flight to San Blas

Small charter planes (3–9 seats) depart from Marcos A. Gelabert Airport (Albrook) in Panama City and land on airstrips within the San Blas archipelago in about 25–30 minutes. This option is faster, more comfortable, and offers stunning aerial views, but costs significantly more than the jeep transfer.

What to Expect on the Jeep Transfer

Most visitors choose the 4×4 jeep because it’s included in charter packages and part of the authentic San Blas experience. Here’s what to expect step by step:

  1. Early pickup: Your driver will collect you from your Panama City hotel at 5:00–5:30am (high season: 4:30am), the early start is necessary to beat traffic and arrive at the coast before your catamaran captain needs to sail.
  2. The mountain road: The Llano–Cartí road is unpaved for most of its length and climbs dramatically through cloud forest. It’s bumpy, winding, and spectacular. Motion sickness medication is recommended if you’re sensitive.
  3. Border control: You’ll pass through a Guna Yala border checkpoint where all visitors must pay a small entrance fee (around $20) and show valid ID. Have cash ready.
  4. The Port Tupile Dibin: At the coast, a boat tender will transfer you from the dock out to your catamaran or island destination. This short ride takes 10–30 minutes depending on where you’re headed.

Best Time of Year to Visit San Blas

San Blas is south of the hurricane belt, which means it’s a year-round destination, one of its biggest advantages over other Caribbean islands. However, conditions do vary:

How Long Should You Stay in San Blas?

Most guests find that 3 nights is the minimum to truly enjoy San Blas, and 5–7 nights is the sweet spot for a full catamaran charter experience. With 365 islands to explore, including the famous Dutch Cays, Coco Bandero Cays, and the Star Fish Islands, a week flies by remarkably fast.

Our San Blas catamaran charters run from 2 nights up to 7 nights. We recommend at least 4 nights to get to the more remote islands that group tours can’t reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to visit San Blas?

San Blas (Guna Yala) is an autonomous indigenous territory within Panama. You don’t need a separate visa, but you do need a valid passport and will pay an entrance fee at the border. Standard Panama visa rules apply for your nationality.

Is the road to San Blas safe?

Yes, thousands of visitors travel it every week. AMPA Tours works only with experienced local drivers who know the road well. The route requires a proper 4×4 vehicle and should not be attempted in a regular car, especially during the rainy season.

Can I get sick on the journey?

The mountain road is winding and can cause motion sickness in some passengers. We recommend taking medication the night before if you’re prone to it. Once you reach the islands, the catamaran sails on calm, protected Caribbean waters, seasickness is very rare in San Blas.
